My Journey to God

Opportunity

If you ever get the chance
to sit along the shore
make certain
it is morning
while your thoughts are still hushed
and the world around you
still sleeps. This way
you can notice these things—
like how the ripples
never stop arriving
gently at your feet;
and the family of geese
you see in the distance
seem to have nowhere
they need to go; and how the rising sun
creates a bright lattice-work design
that sparkles across the water;
and every sound you hear
you simply describe
as music. You decide then and there
that there is no better definition for peace
than this and rather than making to-do lists
or remembering past regrets,
you recall a line
from a favorite poem instead:
“I rest in the grace of the world, and am free.”
